I am no designer, but I made this denim jacket look pretty

Why am I so obsessed with denim jackets?

The question I’ve been asked quite a lot.

Since I was a little child, I have plenty of pictures of me wearing many different denim jackets. Although I have had one period of time where I hated them (probably because my mum is a sucker for them as well and made me wear them a lot), the enormous love for them quickly came back.

To this day I’ve worn many different styles of these jackets and found the one which suits me the most. It is the oversized loose/baggy kind which can be bought in the men’s section. This brings me to this article’s beauty which had been in the making for several hours while my back was in literal agony. (not to be dramatic though)

I was inspired by one design I stumbled over in a Youtube video (which wasn’t even about fashion). As soon as I saw the text on the back of the jacket, I felt the urge to go out immediately and buy the essentials for making my version. And since it was already about 11 p.m. I did the exact thing the next day after school.

I’ve searched second hands in a hope that I could find cheap ordinary jackets which I’d turn into something playful and 100% me. Unfortunately, I had no luck – then I visited a local tiny shop which wasn’t so pricey after all, bought the desired denim jacket in the men’s section (trust me, they offer cheaper and more suitable denim jackets), and enthusiastically returned home. That day I went to bed very late.

If not now, when?

I started by creating an outline of the text and prepared the white paint. Then I realised since it won’t be very visible I might just freehand the text right away. And it was a success, I also created this messy look by putting some of the white paint on the edge and pockets of the jacket – I let the paint dry. (Who am I kidding? I am very impatient, so I used a hairdryer.)

Once it was done it was time for ripping. I needed only scissors and tweezers for that part. This part always takes ages, so I did only a few small holes/rips and found out that eventually, it looked better anyway.

The finishing touch was adding little rings. I am a huge fan of this trend and thought that it was the exact cherry on top that jacket needed. What I used are in fact earrings which I could never be bothered to wear because they simply suck as earrings – it would take not even ages but centuries to put on and your red ear would be on the edge of falling off. So, I reused them for something that can actually be worn.

And here is the final look. I believe it is a success and I am very proud to have this design which is honestly me.

I believe that creating your own design of clothes is such a great experience for you. Even though it is very time consuming, you feel so happy to have something that’s only yours and unique. I think this is a form of art. I am a fan of creating art even if it’s not particularly a masterpiece. It’s you and that’s what’s the most beautiful.
