This simple question can have up to million unique answers. It all depends on point of views that can be as different as chalk and cheese. In this post, I’d like to take a closer look on this matter. And that’s why I decided to contact people from various countries and ask them what music means to them personally. What are the tunes they put on to beat the silence? And what is the purpose behind it?

I want to show the similarities and differences, give people the right to have their say in this and find out what it is about music that can totally control our emotions.

So, without a further ado, let’s hear the answers!

Klára (Czech Republic, 18):

I find it really hard to sum it up into sentences. It’s only because music means so much to me. It can have an entertaining purpose, but it may also serve as a way to express yourself. When you can’t find the right words, you might just discover what you’re looking for hidden in a song and that it the best feeling. It’s priceless. My most favourite artists are probably Ed Sheeran, Birdy, Lauv or M83.

Matty (United Kingdom, 20):

Music personally means to me a way of feeling emotions very quickly and suddenly purely as a result of the music itself and not by internal thoughts. It’s also a great way to create special moments with your friends and the people you love. Some of my favourite artists include The Killers, Swedish House Mafia and Elvis!

Lívia (Spain, 18):

Music means a lot to me. I can’t spend one day without listening to a song. I like different types of music like r&b, rap or pop. Some of my favourite artists are Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Khalid, Bebe Rehxa, Selena Gomez, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars,…

Jake (United Kingdom, 19):

Music is a good stress relief for me as when I feel I start to feel horrible about a certain situation then I would turn to music. And music is also a good way to romantically please a date. My favourite artists must be Joel Adams, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran.

Tova (Sweden, 18):

Music is something very important to me. I listen to music at least one hour per day, it makes me calm down, get excited or just enjoying whatever you do but with a little touch of ‘more feeling.‘ A life without music is for me a very lonely life. Because without music you can’t express your feelings in such exact way. If you’re sad maybe you want to listen to sad or slow music, no words needed. But music can also cheer you up! And where to begin with my favourite artists…Imagine Dragons is my absolute favourite band, that’s for sure but there are other artists such as Avicii, Zara Larsson and Swedish singer called Molly Sandén.

Fabienne (Germany, 18):

To me, music is something that brings people together and builds a bonding. It's like a language that everyone speaks, even when they might not be able to communicate through words. It's crazy what effects music can have on your body but also on your soul. There seem to exist songs for every single situation or mood you might find yourself getting into.

My music taste can is connected to all kinds of genres. What I heavily appreciate in every genre are electric guitars. I couldn't even imagine not having one to call my own and playing along to My Chemical Romance songs on a Friday night. It feels like meditating to me.

When I said that music connects, I must mention the fact, that I met one of my greatest friends though our interest in the same artist.

Do you know that feeling when you go to a concert and you feel like you know everyone through their music preference so everyone will act like one big family? It's such a beautiful thing.

Tine (Norway, 21):

Music has always been a huge part of my life. I play the flute, so music has been a way for me to meet new friends. Music always makes me feel better when I’m down and like I’m not alone. I listen to a lot of different music, and I don’t really know who my absolute favourite artist is. But, some of my most listened artists are Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Sigrid and Ed Sheeran.

Thank you to all who participated & remember to never stop listening to music!
